Senior Staff System Mechanical Design Engineer
Mission:
Lead end-to-end mechanical design and development of Groq’s AI/ML system hardware — from concept through manufacturing — ensuring cost-optimized, thermally efficient, and structurally robust mechanical systems are delivered on aggressive product cycles.
Responsibilities & opportunities in this role:
- System-Level Mechanical Design Leadership – Translate system requirements and electrical/mechanical PRDs into detailed chassis, enclosure, and subassembly designs. Ensure all mechanical decisions align with product performance, manufacturability, and reliability targets.
- Chassis & Blade Development – Design mechanical chassis for blades and server-level enclosures from scratch, optimizing for airflow, cooling, and serviceability.
- Thermal & Structural Analysis – Perform CFD and structural analysis to validate designs against thermal and mechanical constraints. Collaborate with thermal and electrical engineers to co-optimize designs.
- DFM/DFX & Manufacturing Ownership – Drive design-for-manufacturability and assembly with vendors and CM partners. Ensure smooth transition from prototype to high-volume production.
- Prototyping & Validation – Build and test mechanical prototypes, analyze test results, and iterate designs for performance and quality.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration – Partner with electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to ensure cohesive system-level design. Support board, rack, and chassis integration efforts.
- Hands-On Lab Engagement – Participate in bring-up, assembly, and troubleshooting at the system and rack levels. Drive root cause analysis for mechanical and integration issues.
- Documentation & Change Control – Maintain CAD models, drawings, and engineering change orders (ECOs) to support traceable, production-ready design releases.
Ideal candidates have/are:
- Mechanical Design Expertise – 6–10+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for servers, compute blades, or datacenter hardware.
- CAD Mastery – Expert in SolidWorks, Creo, or NX with demonstrated 3D modeling and detailed drawing capability, including GD&T.
- Thermal & Structural Competence – Experience running thermal and structural simulations (CFD, FEA) to validate system performance.
- Manufacturing Depth – Familiarity with sheet metal, machined parts, plastics, and thermal interface materials; hands-on with prototype and production builds.
- Systems Perspective – Proven success designing mechanical systems around electronic components (boards, heat sinks, fans, connectors, cabling).
- Lab-Ready Problem Solver – Proficient in debugging assembly, fit, and performance issues directly on the lab floor.
- Collaborative, Self-Driven Engineer – Strong communicator who thrives in cross-functional environments with tight deadlines and high visibility.
Attributes of a Groqster:
- Humility – Egos are checked at the door
- Collaborative & Team Savvy – We make up the smartest person in the room, together
- Growth & Giver Mindset – Learn it all versus know it all, we share knowledge generously
- Curious & Innovative – Take a creative approach to projects, problems, and design
- Passion, Grit, & Boldness – No-limit thinking, fueling informed risk-taking
