Mission:
As Senior Tax Manager you will support Groq’s Head of Tax in building a scalable tax function that can keep pace with rapid growth, complex financing, and increasing compliance and reporting expectations. You will own key tax workstreams end-to-end, which can include global tax provisions, direct and indirect compliance management, while partnering cross-functionally to strengthen governance, documentation, and controls. This role is hands-on and process-oriented, with a focus on building durable tax operations and SOX-ready controls.
Location: If you're located near one of our offices in Palo Alto, California or Toronto, Canada, you might be asked to work hybrid.
Responsibilities & opportunities in this role:
- Support the Head of Tax in operating and scaling Groq’s global tax function, including planning, prioritization, and execution across tax provisions, compliance, audits, and special projects.
- Drive income tax accounting activities, including preparing interim and annual tax provision deliverables under ASC 740 and local statutory financials (current/deferred, footnote disclosures, valuation allowance analysis, and documentation of key positions).
- Build and maintain a SOX-ready tax close and reporting process, including control design, documentation, evidence standards, in partnership with Accounting, Internal Audit (as applicable), and external auditors.
- Manage global income tax compliance; coordinate extensions, estimated payments, and tax notice resolution.
- Partner with Accounting and FP&A to improve book-to-tax data readiness (trial balance mapping, fixed assets, SBC, R&D capitalization/§174 impacts, interest limitation considerations, and other recurring book-tax differences).
- Help establish and operate indirect tax processes/compliance (sales/use tax; VAT/GST), including working with RevOps/Deal Desk on taxability questions and exemption documentation.
- Assist with data center exemption efforts.
- Support international tax and transfer pricing efforts as the business footprint grows, including coordinating with external advisors on policy, documentation, and compliance inputs.
- Create clear, repeatable tax documentation (process narratives, position memos, workpapers) that improves auditability.
- Collaborate with Legal, Payroll, and Operations on tax-sensitive initiatives (entity changes, intercompany agreements, new jurisdictions, vendor/customer structuring considerations).
- Drive innovation and automation of existing processes to increase accuracy and efficiency of global tax reporting and compliance processes.
Ideal candidates have/are:
- CPA and/or MS in Tax preferred
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience (public accounting and/or in-house), with meaningful experience in high-growth, multi-entity environments (pre-IPO and/or public-company readiness strongly preferred).
- Must have strong hands-on experience with ASC 740 income tax accounting and provision processes, including high-quality documentation and audit support.
- Must have experience assisting with income tax reporting for global local statutory financials.
- Must have demonstrated experience building and operating SOX-aligned controls for tax processes (e.g., control design and documentation, evidence collection, issue remediation).
- Solid foundation in global corporate income tax compliance, including managing tax vendors and owning deliverable quality and timelines.
- Experience partnering closely with Accounting/Finance stakeholders and translating messy inputs into clean, supportable tax outputs and workpapers.
- Exposure to financing- and debt-related tax matters (or strong interest and demonstrated ability to ramp quickly), including working with advisors on technical analysis and documentation.
- Clear communicator with strong technical writing skills (memos, process documentation) and the ability to drive workstreams independently in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.
- Seasoned project management skills and ability to successfully manage and prioritize multiple projects with a strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
