About Numeral
Numeral is building the automation backbone for internet commerce — starting with the painful world of sales tax compliance. We handle everything from registration to remittance, delivering a white-glove service so e-commerce businesses can stay laser-focused on what they do best: growing their products, customers, and teams.
We’re one of the fastest-growing companies from Y Combinator’s W23 batch, backed by top-tier investors including Benchmark Capital. Our team has deep roots from the early days at Stripe, Airbnb, Notion, and other breakout companies — and now we’re bringing that same level of craft, speed, and ambition to a space that’s long overdue for reinvention.
Numeral is small but mighty. Growth is already borderline unmanageable — which means every hire we make now will directly shape the trajectory of the company. If you’re excited about joining as an early team member and want the kind of ownership that defines careers, we want to meet you.
Mission
Running an online business today means wearing a thousand hats — most of them not the reason founders started their company. Our mission is to eliminate the administrative and accounting burdens that distract businesses from doing what they love.
We’ve already helped hundreds of merchants avoid the headache of building giant finance teams just to manage tax compliance. Tomorrow, we’re scaling that impact even further: building the automation layer that lets internet businesses stay nimble, compliant, and future-proof.
About the role:
We’re hiring Numeral’s first Controller — a senior operator who will own the accuracy, integrity, and scalability of our global accounting and financial systems. This role is deeply cross-functional, highly technical, and critical to preparing Numeral for its next stage of growth.
You’ll design and run a predictable month-end close, build a pristine quote-to-cash engine, stand up international entities and transfer pricing frameworks, lead our first audit, and architect the systems that support a company scaling 3–5x.
You’ll report directly to the VP Finance as the most senior accounting leader at Numeral. Together, you’ll build the foundation of the Finance function — identifying gaps, designing scalable processes, and shaping how financial operations evolve as we grow. This is a hands-on role today with the opportunity to build a high-performing accounting team over time.
Core Responsibilities:
Run a Best-in-Class Global Accounting Function
Own month-end close, consolidations, reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis.
Maintain a clean chart of accounts, strong internal controls, and audit-ready documentation.
Partner with FP&A on accurate source data, reporting structure, and operational handoffs.
Improve visibility into spend, payroll, and vendor costs through well-designed processes.
Make Quote-to-Cash Airtight
Own revenue recognition, ASC 606 compliance, and deferred revenue schedules.
Partner closely with Sales, RevOps, Onboarding, and Engineering to ensure clean pipeline data and eliminate systemic Q2C issues.
Maintain a reliable single source of truth for ARR, billing, collections, and customer usage.
Lead International Expansion & Global Entity Operations
Stand up new foreign entities (EU, UK, Canada, etc.): accounting, statutory reporting, tax registrations, banking, and payroll.
Design intercompany agreements, cost-sharing arrangements, and transfer pricing.
Manage multi-currency accounting and ASC 830 compliance.
Build scalable playbooks as we enter additional markets.
Architect Numeral’s Financial Systems & Data Infrastructure
Lead planning and execution for our ERP migration, including chart of accounts redesign, data migration, integrations, and parallel close.
Own financial data integrity across Salesforce, Stripe, tax/usage systems, and the ERP.
Build the automation roadmap to replace manual work with scalable systems and workflows.
Evaluate future systems needs as the company grows 3–5x.
Lead Audit Readiness & Technical Accounting
Serve as the primary contact for our first audit.
Build and maintain tie-outs, memos, documentation, and support schedules.
Evaluate new technical accounting topics as the business and product evolve.
Establish and maintain financial policies including capitalization, impairment, expense recognition, and stock compensation.
Operational & Team Building
Oversee AP, payroll, procurement workflows, vendor onboarding, and spend controls.
Improve operational processes across Finance, Sales Ops, People Ops, Engineering, and Legal.
Build and mentor an accounting team as we scale — establishing structure, clarity, and operational discipline.
Qualifications:
7+ years of progressive accounting experience with significant ownership of month-end close.
Experience in a high-growth SaaS company, or similarly fast-moving and complex environment.
Strong grounding in ASC 606 and revenue operations.
Experience with multi-entity, multi-currency accounting and technical topics (ASC 830, intercompany, transfer pricing).
Hands-on experience with an ERP (QBO, NetSuite, Rillet, Campfire preferred) and financial systems integrations.
Ability to work cross-functionally and influence without formal authority.
Excellent communicator with a bias for clarity, ownership, and operational rigor.
CPA strongly preferred (or equivalent depth in technical accounting).
Bonus Points For:
Prior experience as a Controller, Senior Assistant Controller, or similar role in a venture-backed startup.
Experience leading ERP migrations (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, etc.).
Strong Salesforce/Stripe/RevOps familiarity (billing, routing, custom fields, integrations).
Background in payments, compliance, or tax-adjacent systems.
Experience supporting investor reporting, audits, due diligence, or product launches.
